Siren

 O how she beckons!

The shore is bleak.

Shards of rock from violent

molten embrace glisten in the spray.

From the center of the earth

they crept and now

so pierce the undulating sea

that no ship may pass

within her reach.

Alone

she sings of days long past

when the gods had not yet

spirited her voice away

above the wind,

beyond the ken of sailors.

Alone

She waits for a nameless lover

to be swept into her waiting arms.

Deaf to her song

and blind to her beauty,

his salty tears will mingle

with her own. His breath

will escape on the wind

and he will belong to her

forever.
